Barbra Streisand made her directorial debut with this 1983 adaptation of the Isaac Bashevis Singer story about a young Eastern European woman (Streisand) who disguises herself as a male at the turn of the century in order to get an education. Except for an excessive musical score with too many songs and Streisand's tiresome tendency to play characters who suppress their beauty, the film is crisp and engaging, and the gender-bending love story complications are fun, if gimmicky. Streisand gives a smart, vulnerable performance and gets fresh work from costars Mandy Patinkin and Amy Irving. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Classic Movie   September 5, 2010

Brabra Srteisand proves she can do so much more than just sing - which she does great!

5 out of 5 stars Yentl -- a moving compelling story   August 20, 2010

This was excellent --- beyond my expectations. Did not see in in the movie theater when it first came out. Discovered the beautiful haunting music first and then only saw parts of the film on television over the years. It is a wonderful story of courage and determination -- even though heart-wrenching at times. Barbra Streisand is tremendous and have to give her credit for making a film which doesn't make her very feminine or attractive. A huge Bravo! from me.

5 out of 5 stars Musical Score Could Stand Alone!   July 14, 2010
Kaylyn R. George
What an amazing movie! I was able to share it with a friend of mine just the other night for the first time and we so enjoyed the production. It took me back to when I fell in love with it the first time. Such a wonderful story and the music could carry the story on its own. Love it! Barbra Streisand at her very best!!

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC AND MOVING FILM!!   June 22, 2010
C. Espinosa (WI, U.S.A.)
The extended version is a treat with the deleted scenes added into the theatrical version. Love them! You can tell she loved making and being in this movie because of her personal commentary before the movie, and because OF HER AMAZING PERFORMANCE! The scene where she's singing alone to her father in the night after Yentl left home is so heart wrenching and REAL that you can FEEL Barbara's and Yentl's emotion through the camera. Another great musical scene was of course "I like the way I feel" piece. ANYONE who has discovered magnetic love for the first time can relate! And Yentl's awkward scenes with Hadass were very well acted and intense! Bravo Barbara! You made me love you.
